Native dress code ‘moral policing’, alien a virtue

By Amba Charan Vashishth
What an irony that when people are advised to dress property as per Indian traditions, there is a hoarse cry of ‘moral policing’. But these very people are religiously obeying the dress code imposed by our alien British masters.
AC VashishthThe National Commission of Women (NCW) on April 27, 2016 issued a show cause notice to Delhi University’s Hindu college seeking an explanation about the new hostel rules which students have termed moral policing.
The rules listed in the new hostel prospectus ask students to dress as per “normal norms of the society”; warn that no visitors will be allowed without prior permission “including girl students”; allow only one night-out in a month. How can this be termed “moral policing?” What should one call the absence of it?
Would the NCW have found nothing offensive if the new rules provided students to dress against the “normal norms of the society”? Girl students should be allowed “without prior permission” in the boys hostels?
In no educational institution, Hindu College included, is staying in the college hostel mandatory. Students have the liberty to stay  out where there is no ‘moral policing’. But if they wish to stay in the hostel, they have to stand by the rules. Should it not the college management, but the students who should frame the rules? Such a scenario is unheard of even in the most permissive democracies in the world. Can the opponents  visualise the consequences of the absence of ‘moral policing’?,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Narendra Modi’s new five point charter for tax administrators

Aiming to reform and broaden the tax net
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new five point charter for tax administrators can rightly be called an innovative step in bringing reform to the country’s age old and redundant revenue administration, which still has a huge hangover of the British colonial legacy. This charter is uniquely embodied in the word ‘RAPID’ which refers to revenue, accountability, probity, information and digitisation. The message conveyed through this new charter is loud and simple: Make the tax system easier and accessible for the tax payers; at the same time, the defaulters must find it difficult to bend the system.
Heralding dynamism to the complex revenue administration through this kind of ‘people-friendly mechanism’ can be a great boon for the country as a whole when Modi is trying to bring home ‘less Government, more governance’. The need of the hour is to introduce economic reforms, one being prominently in the revenue sector, both for enhancing respect for the law of the land amongst common citizens and indirectly inching towards lessening the burden of so-called ‘tax payment’ deeply ingrained in our ossified edifice of the tax administration.
Addressing a two-day brain storming conference Rajaswa Gyan Sangam, on Thursday, Modi had urged tax administrators to transform into a ‘Karma Sangam’. He asked the senior officials to widen the tax payers from the existing 5.4 crore to 10 crore households. For infusing new blood into the old system, his appeal for changing attitude of the officials towards tax payers is laudable. Today, nearly 42,000 taxmen raise barely eight per cent of the tax. In this age of globalisation and an ever expanding network of information and technology, the revenue department can take one more step for spreading awareness of the benefits of paying tax to the grass root levels.

11 get life in jail for killing 69 in Gujarat massacre

Fourteen years after 69 people were massacred at a Muslim housing society here during the 2002 Gujarat riots, an Ahmedabad court on Friday sentenced 11 of the 24 convicts to life in prison, one man for 10 years and 12 others for seven years.
The quantum of punishment by the special court disappointed Zakia Jafri, the wife of Ehsan Jafri, a former MP who was among those brutally attacked and later burnt in the February 28, 2002 mass murder.
Pronouncing the punishment in a packed courtroom, Special SIT Court Judge P.B. Desai dubbed the day of the killings at the Gulberg Housing Society “the darkest day in the history of civil society”.
But he rejected the prosecution’s request to treat it as a “rarest of rare” case.
Judge Desai refused capital punishment to the convicts as sought by the prosecution and advocates for the victims saying it was beyond his court’s jurisdiction. The prosecution had argued that those murdered, including women and children, were all innocent.......................................................................................
